Stephen Lee needs to win World Snooker Championship, says Joe Johnson – Snooker News
Previous snooker season was a convincing finish for the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Grand Finals winner, England’s Stephen Lee. However, despite performing brilliantly in the PTC Finals, Lee was unable to make an appearance in the 2012 World
Snooker Championship and crashed out of the event at the hands of Andrew Higginson by the score line of 10-6 in the opening round.
The former World Snooker Champions, Joe Johnson, who is a big admirer of Lee, has advised him to keep his cool and stay focused on his game. He also said that in order to become a noticeable potter in the professional line-up, Lee needs a world title in
his CV. Johnson believes winning the World Snooker Championship title makes a potter prestigious and boosts his snooker genius.
While speaking to the local media, Johnson said, “The World Championship is the big one and the one that really counts because it is played over a tremendous amount of frames so any player’s weaknesses will be exposed,” added Johnson, who won in 1986 as
a 150/1 outsider.”
He added, “I could name lots of players who were really great but didn’t manage to win a World Championship. Now they’ve been forgotten. The game of snooker is very much a mental one, look at someone like Jimmy White who never won one despite his talent,
that simply has to be in his head.”
The Englishman started his pro snooker career in 1992 and since then, he has never qualified for the final clash of any World Snooker Championship. He still has the spark to produce fireworks at the baize as he has shown his skills in the final event of
PTC. His form has improved since he clinched the PTC Finals title and now he has got another chance in the recent snooker season to prove his class.
The World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn has added some new snooker events on the calendar which has increased the chances for all potters from around the world to win major and minor ranking snooker tournaments and improve their skills as well as ranking
points. Lee will be looking ahead to start the new season with new determination and aims to gain a strong position in the pro circuit.
