Stephen Maguire believes he missed an opportunity in 2012 World Snooker Championship
Former UK Championship winner, Scotland’s Stephen Maguire had a convincing run in the 2012 World Snooker Championship and managed to hit the semi-final stage of the mega event where he faced the former World Snooker Championship finalist Ali Carter.
Despite his impressive performance in the competition, Maguire was unable to win the penultimate clash and tumbled down to the Captain by the score line of 17-12. He believes he missed a golden opportunity to surge into his first World Championship final.
While speaking to the media, Maguire said, “I hope I can come back and win it, but it's going to get tougher now. I missed a really big opportunity this year. I'll get over it, I'm a big boy, but I've definitely missed a big chance to get my hands on the
trophy.”
He added, “It seems as though I've just taken a hit after hit. I'm just glad the season's over for the next few weeks, I need a rest. It starts to hurt after a while if you get so close and then don't go on and win it.”
He started his Championship campaign with his first round match against the young Belgian potter, Luca Brecel. The player showed outstanding performance in the qualifying session of the event and made his way impressively to the televised stages. However,
he failed to improvise accordingly against the Maggi and lost to him 10-5.
In his second round clash, Maguire faced England’s Joe Perry and after putting up an excellent snooker display at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, he defeated the Englishman by the score line of 13-7. The quarter-final encounter seemed tough for Maguire
as he was up against the former seven-time World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry but the Livewire breezed to victory by 13-2.
His defeat against Carter was major blow for him as he was not expecting that. Nevertheless, he is now determined to restart his impressive run in the next snooker season. It will be interesting to see how Maguire manages to build up some confidence in his
game and works hard towards improving his snooker skills.
