Stephen Maguire did not expect to play 2012 German Masters against Ronnie O’Sullivan
Stephen Maguire put up a wonderful show in all matches of the 2012 German Masters tournament, but the Scotsman was unable to carry his form in the final and lost it to Ronnie O’Sullivan at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin. Despite dominating the final encounter
in the first two sessions, the former three-time World Snooker Champion, O’Sullivan managed to nudge the Scot down by the score line of 9-7 to claim the German title.
The reason for Maguire’s loss may be the fact that he was not aiming to play in the final. Maguire spoke about his target in his post-match interview and added that he was not expecting to get into the final match.
The Scotsman said, “I've beaten some good players this week and if I'm honest I probably wasn't expecting to get to the final - but I can't look at it that way now ... I just want to jump off a bridge.”
The Livewire added, “I should have made it 7-5 but I played a bad positional shot and when it went 6-6 he had the rhythm - I think that was the turning point in the match.”
The 30-year-old Maguire whitewashed the reigning World Snooker Champion John Higgins and the former champ, England’s Shaun Murphy en route to the ultimate battle. After showing such a tremendous performance, losing in the final must have broken the cueist.
Meanwhile, the Rocket, Ronnie O’Sullivan enjoyed his Berlin visit and appreciated the arena arrangements as well as the supporters.
The Essex Exocet said, “This is the best venue we play in on the tour. It used to be Wembley Conference Centre ... but it's brilliant to play here and get to the final. I'm 36 now and coming to the end of my career so every victory now is nice. If I can
nick a tournament here or there it's great - it would be nice to go out at the top.”
The 2012 German Masters snooker event did feature some of the best snooker contests including a couple of major upsets. The whole event was televised on British Eurosport.
