Stephen Maguire feels disappointed after losing to Peter Ebdon in 2012 China Open final
Despite reaching the second final of a major ranking snooker event in the current season, Scotland’s Stephen Maguire was not able to win any title. He made his way tremendously into the final clash of the 2012 China Open snooker tournament against the former
World Snooker Champion from England, Peter Ebdon and lost to him 9-10.
The Scotsman played impressively throughout the tournament at the Beijing University Students Gymnasium arena. He defeated a couple of big names during his run including the former three-time World Snooker Champion, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarter-final
encounter. He was aiming to hit the title but Ebdon’s terrific run against him in the finals ended his hopes.
Former World Snooker Champion, Ebdon dominated in the first two sessions of the game and nudged his opponent four frames down at 6-2. Maguire fought back in the next two sessions and responded the same way winning six frames to pull level at 8-8. At the
end of 18th frame, the pair was again on 9-9. The final frame finished in Ebdon’s favour and he clinched the title.
Maguire felt a bit disappointed after losing to Ebdon but on the same hand he was satisfied with his form in the event.
Speaking to World Snooker, Maguire said, “If I'd lost 10-1 or 10-2, it would have meant I wasn't even part of the match. I just tried hard tonight to make a match of it, to make sure Peter won it, not gift him the title. Which eventually I did. I can take
a lot of fighting qualities out of it.”
He added, “At 8-8, I let him in first, and he missed an easy red, and he could have left me a chance. I was on a bit of a roll then, and had made a few breaks to go 8-8. And if I had got in, I would have scored, and scored heavy. But he didn't leave anything
on, and then he made a good break to go 9-8 up.”
He is currently in England practising for the upcoming 2012 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
