Stephen Maguire has high hopes for Luca Brecel in future: 2012 World Snooker Championship
First round match of the 2012 World Snooker Championship between the Belgian youngster Luca Brecel and the experienced Scotsman Stephen Maguire finished in favour of the Scot.
However, the young Brecel also showed some outstanding snooker shots during the game and really impressed Maguire with his great talent and believes that the young Brecel can be a great player in the future.
Despite his victory, Maguire has wished Brecel good luck and foresees a great future ahead for the youngster. The Scotsman appreciated the way Brecel earned his place in the initial stages of the mega event at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Brecel had
to defeat four opponents in the qualifying session of the event to book his place against Maguire.
Speaking to the World Snooker, Maguire said, “The talent is there. I just think it's a matter of time, it probably won't be that long before he's competing for tournaments. I hope he doesn't fall off the tour because it'll be a travesty for the game.”
The Scot added, “I wouldn't be at all surprised if he wins it any time soon. I should never have been 6-1 up, I was stealing frames that I was never in. He's done the right thing, coming in and having a go and enjoying it.”
Maguire underwent a lot of pressure when the youngster clinched the opening frame of the match to lead the game 0-1. Nevertheless, Maguire fought back into the game and played up to the mark to snatch the lead from Brecel. Maguire put up a brilliant performance
to take back the lead.
At the end of the second session, Maguire was leading the match by the score line of 6-3. After that, Brecel could only add two sets in his side of the score board while Maguire cleared the table in four frames to claim the victory. Maguire showed why he
is such a successful snooker player with his tremendous performance against Brecel.
Despite losing his chance in the Championship, Brecel is quite happy and satisfied that he at least made it to the televised stages of the tournament. He also hopes for a positive run in the next season.
