In all-Scotland quarter-final encounter of the 2012 World Snooker Championship, Stephen Maguire was able to beat the former seven-time World Snooker Champion and the living snooker legend, Stephen Hendry by the score line of 13-2 to book his place in the
penultimate stage of the event against England’s Ali Carter.
After the quarter-final encounter, Stephen Hendry announced his retirement from the game in the post match interview. Hendry’s retirement was quite sudden and surprised everyone who loved him and followed him.
Hendry spoke to the reporters after his match and said, “There's a few reasons - the schedule, the fact I'm not playing the snooker I want to play, and the fact I'm not enjoying practice. It was quite an easy decision. I didn't tell many people but this
is me finished from tournament snooker.”
Hendry was already planning for his retirement and just wanted to finish the season. Although his dream was to win his eighth World Snooker Championship so that he could be remembered forever but he also believed that it was an appropriate time for him to
leave the game. The Wonder Brain finished his career in a style compiling his 11th maximum 147 break against Stuart Bingham.
The Scotsman Maguire was also shocked on the Golden Brain’s retirement from the game. Maguire felt very sad after knowing that Hendry left the table for good.
While speaking to the media, Maguire said, “I'm shell-shocked, he's awesome. He's the best player in the world and the best to ever have picked up a cue. It's sad to see him go, I was never expecting that.”
Hendry will now be heading to China to coach the Chinese cuemen because currently the focus of the game of snooker is shifting towards and the day is not far when China will become the biggest country to host most of the snooker’s major ranking events. It
will be interesting to see what type of impact Hendry will have as he coaches the Chinese players. His tremendous skill and competitive spirit will be a definite plus for the players to learn from.
