Stephen Maguire sets up John Higgins clash after beating Ryan Day in Round 1: 2012 German Masters
Scotland’s Stephen Maguire has secured an easy victory over Welshman, Ryan Day in the initial round of 2012 German Masters at the Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany. The Glasgow cueman was quite impressive at the baize and did not let his opponent come at the
table during the game, as he smashed some superb knocks to oust the Welshman by an easy score line of 5-1.
The Scotsman showed his class during the game and completely upset the Welsh potter. During his opening match, the Scottish professional potter pocketed some outstanding clearances of 88, 82, 67 and 57 to top the day’s proceedings. The 5-1 victory was surely
a testimony of Maguire’s practice sessions that he had been doing after winning the Players Tour Championship (PTC) Event 12.
Speaking to World Snooker after winning his initial match, Maguire said, “That was one of the best matches I've played this season, especially as Ryan is among the toughest draws you can get. He should have gone 2-1 up but I managed to nick the third frame,
and after that I didn't miss a ball. I didn't give him any chances.”
The former UK Championship winner added, “After winning a PTC event last month I felt I was on the right track, then I lost in the first round of the Masters. That was a set-back because I really wanted to do well in that one. Since then I have got my head
down and prepared really well. It's just a question of waiting for the results to come.”
Maguire has been performing consistently in the current season. Last year, he secured the runner-up spot in the 2011 Welsh Open after beating the reigning World Snooker Champion, John Higgins. Since then, the Scotsman has not won a single major ranking event.
However, he did win the PTC 12 which gave him a boost during the season.
He will meet the 36-year-old Higgins again in his second-round clash of 2012 German Masters. The encounter will be quite interesting to watch as both potters have already contested in other events and know the strengths and weaknesses of each other.
