Stephen Maguire targeting world title: 2012 World Snooker Championship – Snooker Update
Penultimate stage of the 2012 World Snooker Championship is underway at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield where four top guns, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Matthew Stevens, Ali Carter and Stephen Maguire are battling hard to book a place in the final showdown.
The environment is quite tussling at the venue as the results so far are still close and all the semi-finalists are outing their best to hit a major lead in the game.
The Scotsman, Maguire, who defeated the former seven-time World Snooker Champion Stephen Hendry in the quarter-final stage to book semi-final place against Ali Carter, is still hopeful for a stunning result in the mega event.
He believes he can win the World Championship and add the first world title in his career profile. The Scot has shown great determination during his tournament run and is hoping for a positive outcome.
While speaking to the media, Maguire said, “I heard people saying that I was a future world champion a few years ago – and I believed it, to be honest. I believed in my own ability and it just never happened.”
The Livewire added, “It just hasn't happened but, hopefully, this one or the next one I can get my name on that trophy. I did start to doubt myself that I could win this tournament. I lost a couple of close matches here when I was playing well and thought
I could do a bit of damage here.”
Maguire started his World Championship campaign with a noticeable victory against the young Belgian potter, Luca Brecel by the score of 10-5.
The critics were expecting a better run from Brecel as he showed impressive form in the qualifiers but Maguire stopped his advancement. England’s Joe Perry was Maguire’s opponent in the second round where Maggi hit a classic win by the score line of 13-7.
He faced one of the toughest opponents, Stephen Hendry in the quarters but he did not lose his focus and earned a marvellous win over him by the score of 13-2 to clinch the semi-final berth. Now the On-Fire Maguire is eyeing the World title after he beats
Ali Carter in the semis.
