Stephen Ross sounds caution against instant expectations from Miami Dolphins rookie QB Ryan Tannehill
Miami Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, has jumped into the debate surrounding the pro career prospects of quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, sounding caution against expectations of instant results from the rookie.
Ross has underlined the need of showing patience with the QB and giving him more time and space to see how he performs during the early phase of his career.
He said:
"The important thing is not to have great expectations up front, and bring him along. See how it works for him. He certainly has the talent, and you don't want to get a guy down early. We've seen that before."
A debate about the player’s position has gained firm grounds in Miami. The question around the possibility of placing the rookie on the starting line straightaway has particularly bothered too many minds.
The player himself has also spoken of adopting a cautious approach on the issue, saying he will rather compete for the starting role.
Tannehill, who has come out as the third best QB out of the college league in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, held from April 26 to 28, is in a sort of becoming boom-or-bust prospect.
Although no one has argued about his talent and skills, many draft analysts still are wary of projecting him for earning great success straightaway.
The particular point to note as a possible reason for his delayed success is the lack of experience. He has spent only two seasons as a QB in the college league, while pro environment has its own challenges, which the rookie can find difficult to face off.
However, there is a chance that he is more than successful, especially if he is able to show some hidden talent, as he had been described by Indianapolis Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, during the draft time.
In spite of the cautionary approach, Dolphins’ owner also remains aware of his talent and skills. Ross said his talent was the main reason that attracted them to him.
He said:
"We drafted Tannehill because we thought he'd be a great franchise quarterback. He has all the intangibles, (he's) a great athlete."
Matt Moore and David Garrard – Dolphins’ two veterans are in front of him to compete with for the starting role and only the rookie's performance will prove his capability of doing so.
