Hi, I'm Michael. I'm new here, and this is my first question. What are the steps for getting a Motorcycle License in San Francisco, California? I've been looking at the brochure, but it's very confusing. I am a minor, 17 years old of age. I recently obtain my Commercial License, because i got help from my friends. They tell me the steps in order to get the license. But since I wanted a Motorcycle License, no one knows how to get it. So I turn my heads to you guys, i need help. Anyone, remember, I'm a minor, the steps should be different. Please, someone with experience, please help me out. I want to obtain it as soon as possible. Also, give the steps in a list format... e.g. 1) find a teacher, 2) take some test... blah blah blah.... yea. Please help me.

  1. To apply for a motorcycle Class M1 or M2 permit, you will need to:

    1) Show your California driver license, if you have one issued to you.

    2) Pay the application fee

    3) Pass a vision exam

    4) Pass a traffic laws and signs test for motorcycles

    After completing the requirements, you will be issued an instruction permit to allow you to practice driving a motorcycle. You may not drive at night, on the freeway, or have any passengers with you.

    To apply for your motorcycle driver license, you must:

    5) Be at least 16 years old

    6) Have had your permit for 6 months

    7) Have completed driver education and driver training or have your California driver license.

    8) Complete a motorcycle rider training course given by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). All persons under 21 are required to complete the course.

    9) Submit the CHP completion certificate (You will not be required to take the motorcycle driving test at DMV.)

    For information about the CHP training course, please call 1-877-743-3411 or visit www.ca-msp.org.

    */End of Line.

  2. Cool, I didn't get my CDL until I was like 21.

    Because you are under 21, you must graduate from an MSF riding class.  You must also take the DMV written test for motorcycling.  When you graduate from MSF you NOT have to ride at the DMV.  This is the fast and easy way.

    You can take the test first and get a "permit" to ride, but the permit does not allow you to ride at night, with a passenger, on the freeway and something else.  The permit is good for 6 months, then it must be renewed if you haven't done the MSF course.

    Here is the site for MSF California.
