  1. SPEAK ENGLISH, learn it before you come here!!

  2. On how to communicate?  I'm not sure which country you are arriving from so I don't know what tips to give you regarding what you're currently used to.  UK I presume?  Here are some generic tips:

When talking we generally look each other in the eyes and flick our eyes away about every 30 seconds.  Keeping a dead lock can be intimidating so a flick away every 30 seconds breaks that stare.

We stand about 2 feet apart and feel free to use your hands in gestures.  Talk at a moderate tone.  We don't talk loud and we don't talk quietly.  Just an average voice will work.

Be straight forward and say what you mean... but with tact.  There's no need to be rude, but always be honest.  And no beating around the bush... that's frustrating.

A simple 'hello. how are you? I'm fine thanks.' is great for in passing.

Cursing is fine in a casual setting and most adults will not be offended.  If they are they will tell you so, but anywhere that's more formal (restaurant, business environment) it is very inappropriate.  Also, never around children.

Do NOT under any circumstances discuss politics, racism, religion, or any other controversial topic.  Not even close family members have these discussions.  So asking about Bush is highly taboo even though the response will probably be what you're looking for.  It's classless.  Just don't do it despite the urge.

Also, be careful when discussing sports.  People usually have very strong opinions on this and if you're not up for a good debate it's not worth the trouble.  Also, no football vs. football or football vs. rugby discussions.  You'll change no one's opinion and it's just a waste of breath.  There is nothing wrong with discussing teams though, but like I said, expect firm feelings on the particular team.

    I hope that helps.  :)
