Now I know there is alot of detail and work needed prior to starting a business in terms of financing/ detailed buisness plan ect.

However, I would like to know the initial steps in getting my business legal and registered. its a computer repair shop, and im operating it out of my house until we can obtain a commercial building.

I have a name for my business- do i need to register it?

I need to get a EIN *(federal tax id)

I need to get a local business licence as well.

Anything else? and in which order should i do this in? Thanks

  4. First you go to the city hall where you are based and apply for a business license, the cost is usually under $75, next go to a bank of your choice and open a business checking account, the bank will tell you the steps you need to take. There is no need for a EIN when you are operating as a sole proprietor, you simply use your Social Security Number on all forms and tax returns. And last but not least if you ever plan on having a website you must register your domain name, I recommend to start by going to www.instantdomainsearch.com to see if the name you want is available, the cost to register your name is very minimal and depends on which company you select to do this. I believe you can register your name for $9.99 and a yearly fee for renewal of $19.95.
