Question:

Sterilised male cat urinating in the house?

I have an almost 6 year old male cat, mixed breed. He is a nervous disposition, and he is an indoor only cat. He was sterilised at 9 months old but it hasn't stopped him from urinating in the house, specifically on clothes and furniture. He is litter box trained and his litter tray is always available to him. I can't pinpoint exact events that would be causing nervous urination. Any insights on why he would be doing this?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Take your cat to the vet and get him looked at. My cat started doing this and I didn't pay much attention to it. Unfortunately I got up one morning and the poor critter was in so much pain that he actually growled at me (which is WAY out of character for this cat - he follows me around like a dog and just overall adores me). At this point I took my cat to the vet, and it turned out that he had a blocked urethrae and it cost over $1,000 to get fixed up.  (Although he had an allergic reaction to one of the drugs, which led to an after hours Sunday appointment and re-hospitalisation, driving up the cost).

It was at that point I was informed that cats urinating outside of their litter tray when they're clearly litter train usually means that they've associated the litter tray with pain and they have an underlying medical problem.

Also my vet put me onto a product called Felaway, which are pheromones for cats. Without them my cat relapses, but when I have the product going, he's in perfect health.

  2. I have a cat same age and everything! Same exact problem! The only way we got it taken care of was making him an half out side half inside cat!

  3. Did this just start? I had that problem, took him to the vet and he had a UTI. With medication it can be cleared up. Without it, he could die.

If it isn't, try a different litter.
