Sterling Steward, Jr. announced as the new Athletics Director at Savannah State University
Sterling Steward, Jr has been hired as the new Athletics Director at Savannah State University, as he has been handed over with the new responsibility to revamp the sport at the university and to maintain its competitive edge over rivals.
Steward brings in vast experience of managing diversified sports at various levels. Prior to joining Savannah State University, he had been working at institutions like Mississippi Valley state, Xavier of New Orleans, Kentucky State, Alabama State and Eastern
Oregon.
The rich experience the newly appointed director has will certainly help out in reviving the sport in Savannah University, and perhaps his experience and that too at some apex institutions have prompted his current institution to prefer him over other applicants
for the post.
Before taking an oath for his current posting, Steward had been working as a senior consultant for the Mississippi Valley State University’s Athletics Administration since April. Prior to that, he held the post of Interim Athletic Director at the Alabama
State University from September, 2009 to June, 2010.
While addressing media personnel, Steward claimed that his vision for the university’s Athletics department was to create and stick to commitment for success. By success he meant the desired performance in all programmes of the sport. He was of the view
that he wanted to lead by example and turn all student athletes at the campus into leaders. He said, “We have a great product here. Just need to get it out there for everyone to see.”
An experienced Director Athletics and that too who has a resolve to lead by example is certainly expected to yield results the university has entrusted him for. However, to what extent he will remain successful in acquiring the promised goals will only become
visible once he provides the athletics administration with a brief and through policy.
Such policy will not only determine the absolute success of the university athletics department, but will also assess the relative success of the university in Athletics in comparison to their rivals in the sport.
