  1. steroidal saponins are naturally occuring substances that are found in a variety of edible and medicinal plants. Some are very common. In the amounts normally found in plants, they are generally to be regarded as safe. Isolating and concentrating them might be a different story.

    Some medicinal plants, such as ginseng, owe much of their effect to a high concentration of steroidal saponins (ginsenosides in this case). A strong medicinal herb of this sort, while usually fairly well tolerated, may be unsafe in certain individuals with other pre-existing conditions, or in people who are taking incompatible medications.
