Steve Bruce expects Darren Bent to be fit in time
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce expects star striker Darren Bent to be fit in a few weeks and hopes that the injury wouldn’t harm the club’s cause in the premier league.
The 26 year old striker has been in red hot form this season, having scored 7 times in 8 appearances. The player also scored his first goal for the International side last month, and was thus expected to be partnering Wayne Rooney is last night’s 0-0 stalemate
with Montenegro in the Euro 2012 qualifier. Bent was Sunderland’s top scorer last season and was the best player for the club.
However, owing to a groin injury, Darren Bent couldn’t play a part in the Montenegro clash and is doubtful to be back in time for Sunderland’s next premier league fixture with Blackburn Rovers. The manager expects the player to return in time for the match
and hopes that the time given for him to recover would be enough to have the striker available for the Blackburn Match.
Darren Bent has picked up his form since joining Sunderland last season and has scored 24 times in 38 league appearances. In all, Bent found the net for a total of 25 times in all competitions. His recent form and talent led Fabio Capello calling the player
in the International fold for the match against Switzerland, which was played back in September. Bent made an off-the-bench substitute and managed an exciting one on one finish to register his first and England’s third goal of 3-1 thrashing of the Swiss. Bent
has proved almost too hot to handle and is one of the top strikers in the premier league.
"Benty's had a scan and England have confirmed he won't play any part. We're hoping it's not too serious, but Darren's still with England at the moment so we won't put any timescales until our own medical team have had a chance to assess the injury," claimed
the Sunderland manager while talking to the press.
Darren Bent has been compared to the likes of Wayne Rooney and his 5 goals in the premier league are the main reason behind Sunderland gaining 8 points in 7 fixtures so far. Sunderland faced some tough sides in their early run-in, with the likes of Arsenal
and Manchester United coming to the Stadium of Light in matter of three weeks. However, Sunderland managed to defend their impressive home record and managed to draw on both occasions.
It was because of this hot form that Bent was expected to get his first start of his International career but it was not possible owing to injury. Bent explained his situation after the injury as:"Devastated, gutted, upset, angry all words that sum up this
situation."
It would be interesting to see how Sunderland does without Darren Bent against Rovers and would really test the team spirit of the team. Sunderland would have to prove that they are not a one man team and 13 million pound signing Asamoah Gyan would be expected
to step up and replace the injured Bent. With Welbeck and Gyan, the side can do fairly well without Bent but Rovers are known to be physical and ruthless in their approach to the game. Steve Bruce would have to change his tactics against Rovers and would have
to do without Bent, who is expected to be out of action for atleast two weeks.
