Steve Cotterill asks for financial backing
Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has asked the club's chairman Balram Chainrai to back him financially when the January transfer window opens.
Chainrai has handed his public backing to Cotterill, who he believes is the best man to guide the Fratton Park club back up to the heights of Premier League football.
"I had lunch with Balu [before the QPR game]. It wasn't ideal to be talking to him too much on a matchday.
They have to get their feet under the table at the club. It's all well and good if they want to go wallop and give over a load of money.
I'm going to be the one spending the money," said Cotterill in the Portsmouth news.
Extra funds would be very useful to Portsmouth in a number of ways. However, the future of the club will be the biggest concern after a period of uncertainty has just ended.
Useful money
With the second, and most important, half of the season coming up, a number of teams will use the January window as a way to gear up for a crack at Premier League promotion.
Portsmouth does have a number of high profile and high quality players. However, the squad is not the biggest in the Championship and welcome additions could be made if
Chainrai releases some extra funds for the transfer budget.
The main problem Cotterill faces is that the club has just come through a period of financial insecurity and uncertainty. Making the business model and future of the club
solid again is likely to be the chairman's top priority.
"So we are going to have to be gentle with them and not put too much
pressure on them. They all seem nice enough guys [the owners], now we have to see what they want to do.
They have already done a rescue job on the club," added Cotterill.
Betting advice
Portsmouth is 14th on the Championship table, which suggests an assault on the play-offs is still possible. Have a punt, but a small one, on Portsmouth going back up to
the Premier League.
