Steve Cotterill demands funds
Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has demanded funds to be used in January if the club wants to go back up to the Premier League.
Cotterill has praised the performance of his team over recent weeks as the takeover of the club from the administrators has been completed by Balram Chainrai. However, he says the club risks a life in
the Championship unless money is freed up for new players.
"If we want to be up and around there, we can't run with the squad we've got.
We need fit boys who can come on and change a game.
I don't mean that to put our players down," said Cotterill.
There is very clear evidence that Portsmouth needs to bring in some fresh faces. There are a few areas around the club that undoubtedly need strengthening if promotion
at the first time of trying is a possibility.
New players needed
New players are needed because Portsmouth is being forced to name weak substitute benches every week. For the match against Nottingham forest over the weekend defenders
Richard Hughes [who hasn't trained for two weeks] and Hermann Hreidarsson [who hasn't played for six months] were named in the squad.
Portsmouth needs some more energy in the midfield for when players start to get tired late on in games. This would keep the off ball energy and pressing very high, which
will reduce the chance of Portsmouth conceding goals late in games. This is ultimately the area where Portsmouth's opponents will have an edge during important Championship games.
The main worry is that if any of the main players at the club pick up a bad injury then there is no replacement to come into the team. The club will be forced to play youth
players in the first team, which will weaken the side.
Betting advice
At this moment in time Portsmouth has an outside chance of Premier League promotion but nothing more. It's extremely unlikely the club will have a lot of money to spend
in January. Back Portsmouth for Championship consolidation but nothing more.
