Steve Cotterill unsure over Greg Halford future at Portsmouth
Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has admitted that he does not know how long he'll be able to keep Wolverhampton Wanderers player Greg Halford at the club on loan.
Halford joined the South coast club from Wolves in October. Cotterill has admitted that he wants to keep the player at Portsmouth for the foreseeable future but has no idea over whether it's a realistic
option.
"I don't know if we will be extending Greg's loan, we haven't had that conversation yet.
He has only just got here and only played three games. We will give it a couple more weeks before I give Mick McCarthy a ring," said Cotterill the
The News, a Portsmouth daily.
It would be a very good idea for Portsmouth to try and keep Halford on for longer because he seems to have had a very positive impact since he arrived. He ultimately gives
Cotterill a lot more options.
Need to hang onto him
Portsmouth needs to do everything possible to try and keep Halford because he's one of the most versatile defensive players around. Halford can play down either flank as
a full back, he can play at centre half and he can cover the defence as a holding midfield player.
Halford is also one of the fittest players in the Championship. This means Cotterill can give him a specific role and then not have to worry about him for the whole game.
He gives 100 per cent from the first second to the last.
The problem is that Halford will attract more attention from his parent club the better he starts playing. This means Wolves will be more reluctant to let him stay at Portsmouth
if it's clear he could do a job back in the Premier League.
"Now we've got Greg in, we are okay back there [defence] for cover.
We have been very light there and now it has been absolutely supplemented by loanees," added Cotterill.
Betting advice
Portsmouth is much harder to beat with Halford in the team. Back them to win when the Wolves man starts any game.
