Steve Cummins disappointed on losing the Olympics spot
Steve Cummins failed to make it through the final squad for the 2012 Olympic Games and the cyclist has shown distress on missing out on such a big opportunity.
Selectors announced the final five-man squad for the biggest sporting event of the year, the London Olympics and Cummins has been left out of the side.
The 31-year-old played an important role in helping Mark Cavendish with his first place finish during the UCI Road World Championships last year and was hopeful to make it his third consecutive appearance.
It would have been his third consecutive Olympics appearance after his superb performance during the 2004 and the 2008 events.
Steve won silver medal in 2004 and occupied an 11th overall position in the Individual Time Trial at the 2008 Olympic Games.
"I'm disappointed, of course. It's everyone's dream to be selected for the Olympics, especially when it's being held in London," Steve cited. "But I hope the guys do well and bring back a gold medal".
David Millar has been included in the final squad and he will be accompanied by numerous well-known cyclists.
David Brailsford briefed that the decision to pick the top five cyclists was never an easy one and took a great deal of consideration.
He briefed that Steve is riding exceptionally well but the main reason behind his exclusion is the fact that he had a couple of crashes and injuries this year.
Four out of five Olympics participants for Britain are currently riding the Tour de France, which include David Millar, Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.
Cummings is also riding the Tour de France and his main role is help Cadel Evans in defending his title.
"Being here with Cadel makes up for it, especially after everything that I've been through this year,” he cited.
“The race has been going well so far. I've managed to stay out of trouble, although I'm braking a lot more and I'm still pretty nervous, but I've been getting through safely".
Team GB five-man team for the 2012 Olympic road race: Mark Cavendish (Team Sky), Chris Froome (Team Sky), David Millar (Garmin-Sharp), Ian Stannard (Team Sky) and Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky).
