Steve Cunningham gets a rematch against Yoan Pablo Hernandez for the title – Boxing news
Currently The Ring’s No. 2 fighter and former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham is scheduled to have a title rematch against the IBF champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez at the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt, Germany on Saturday night.
Cunningham, who is 35 years old and has bagged 24 wins, 3 losses and 12 knockouts in his portfolio, was defeated by Yoan Pablo Hernandez, who is 27 with 24 wins, 1 loss and 13 knockouts in his portfolio.
This will be Cunningham’s fifth title bout in the last 3 years and he is all excited to achieve the feat. In their last fight, Hernandez suffered a deep cut between the eyes which made his corner stop the fight. The decision was considered controversial
due to which Cunningham has never accepted his defeat. In fact, he does not even consider Pablo the rightful owner of the title since he thinks he could have won the fight if the fight had not stopped.
On his fight in Frankfurt, the former champion reiterated, “I'm very comfortable packing up and going to Poland or Germany now that this is, what, my seventh time fighting in one of those countries? I've fought twice in Poland, and this will be my fifth
time fighting in Germany, so it's never a problem doing it. But this time, it's a little bit different.”
As Cunningham puts it, this match is going to be more aggressive and violent than the usual rematches since it is a rematch ordered by IBF after hearing the plea of Cunningham.
According to the IBF, the rematch is mandatory since the previous fight which was held on October 1 ended with a controversial technical decision.
On his loss to Pablo, Cunningham asserted, “I feel that I won the last time. It's one of those things where you know you beat him, and you know that you won. So it's the same situation, but this was just a time where I didn't come out of there with the belt.”
It should be noted here that whoever wins will face Troy Ross, on May 11 or before, as Ross is the mandatory challenger for the title.
