Steve Cunningham plans to move up in weight – Boxing News
Steve Cunningham, former cruiserweight titlist, is set to move up in weight. Cunningham signed with Main Events as his promoter on Wednesday, announcing his plans of moving to the heavyweight division.
The former cruiserweight titlist plans on going head to head with arch rival Tomasz Adamek at the heavyweight division. The duo has already fought at the cruiserweight division and a rematch is in the making once Steve is a heavyweight.
“Moving to heavyweight has always been a move I knew I would make at some point,” said Cunningham while announcing his move to the heavyweight division.
He added, “After my last fight we sat down and looked at our options: It was either continue at cruiserweight and go for another world title, but I felt like what's the point? I have been there and done that twice; or I could finally make the move to heavyweight.
This felt like the right thing to do.”
As of now, Cunningham will enter the ring as a heavyweight on September 8 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. His opponent is not yet decided. The bout will be included as an undercard fight for Adamek vs. Walker card.
On the occasion, Sauerland Event’s general manager Chris Meyer spoke about Steven’s separation with the promotion. “Both parties had mutually agreed to a contract termination some months ago. All of us at Sauerland wish Steven and his family all good. He
is a gentleman and a great ambassador of boxing, both inside and outside the ring,” he said.
Similarly, Chief Executive of Main Events Kathy Duva asserted that Steve Cunningham’s decision of moving up in weight would make the heavyweight division of the United States even more thrilling. According to Duva, Steve, who is 6 foot 3 inches, definitely
has the frame to carry more frame and more strength and that Main Events is eager to see Cunningham fight as a heavyweight as soon possible.
Cunningham concluded his say by adding that he is excited about this new chapter in his life and career. He wants to work closely with Main Events to plan his entry in the division.
