Steve Darcis storms through Dominic Thiem into last eight – Erste Bank Open 2011
Steve Darcis, Belgian World No. 95, eased away with a win against his second round competitor of Erste Bank Open 2011, Dominic Thiem, Austrian world No.1890, ousting the 18-year-old local lad 6-2, 6-2, in an hour and 4 minutes hard indoor circuit match on Thursday, 27th of October.
Playing at Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria, the former world No.44 had an easy take on the young Austrian. Darcis had been performing up to his best in his last 10 matches, losing only 2 out of them. On the other hand, the Muster destroyer did face a real challenger this time, however, was not at all impressive.
With the two contenders making their way into the court and warming up, the local lad got a grave round of applause. Winning the toss the Belgian took his side to light up the match.
Firing up, Darcis served out the starter, game one, rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Thiem, ranked world no.1890, served his first game of the match, however, could not make most of it. Breaking the young local lad in game 2 and serving out game 3, the 27-year-old Belgian stormed away in the lead winning straight 3 games, 3-0.
Finally, winning his first game of the set, Thiem rolled down his side of the scoreboard, 1-3, yet could not break back to cut the lead any further. Maintaining his 3 games lead, Darcis kept on bagging games of respective serves, 4-1 and then 5-2. Left with just one more game win to pocket the first set, world No.95 broke the young local lag and finished off the set, 6-2, and moved on to the second set.
Dominating throughout the first set, Darcis once again served first, for set two, rocking down the scoreboard, 1-0. Covering up the lead, Thiem served out game two and levelled up, 1-1. With a greater defence this time, the young Austrian kept on the Belgians tail until Darcis shoved him off in game 6.
With scores at 2-2, the 27-year-old served out game 5, 3-2, broke the 18-year-old in game 6, 4-2, and served out game seven to lead the set, 5-2, leaving behind just one more game win to win the fixture. Concluding up in style, Darcis broke the young competitor in game eight, 6-2, and ended his straight set 2nd round run winning with mere difficulty.
Making his way into the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 250 event, Darcis now goes on to play Daniel Brands, German, to battle out the semi-final round seat. The fixture starts of on Friday, 28th of October.
