Steve Davies shines in Surrey victory: Friends Life Twenty20 - First Innings Recap

Surrey defeated Sussex by 18 runs in a match of the Friends Life Twnty20, at the Whitgift School, Croydon in England on Monday, July 4, 2011.
The hosts batted first and posted a huge target of 204 runs for the opposition. They lost just a couple of wickets in the innings, as there was not much assistance for the bowlers.
Star England wicketkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SM-Davies-c2542, batted exceptionally well in the match. He scored an unbeaten 99 runs for the Surrey team and remained unbeaten until the end. His score also proved to be the highest of the match in the end.
Although the target was a stiff one, Sussex had plenty of fire power in their batting line-up. They fought back really hard in the match, but ended up being 18 runs short of the total, scoring 185 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
Promising England all-rounder, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LJ-Wright-c1841, led the chase for his team and scored 72 runs at the top of the order. His team’s middle-order proved to be disappointing in the end, failing to capitalise on the start provided by their opener.
There has been a lot of rain in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in the recent days, but the conditions were fine for cricket at Croydon. The sun was out and the batting friendly conditions gave a lot of entertainment to the fans.
The hosts’ captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rory-Hamilton-Brown-c2366, didn’t think twice after winning the toss, as he immediately decided to bat first. The pitch was hard and dry and was expected to produce a lot of runs.
Hamilton-Brown’s decision proved to be a very good one, as the home team batsmen didn’t have any difficulties to bat once they came out to bat in the middle.
Davies and Jason http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611 opened the innings and attacked the bowlers from the very first over of the match. The latter was batting aggressively, but lost his wicket in an attempt to hit the ball too hard. He was sent back to the pavilion after adding 18 runs
to the total from 10 balls with the help of one four and a couple of massive sixes.
This brought the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851’s skipper in the middle and he batted really well alongside the keeper batsman. The pair put together 105 runs for the second wicket partnership before Hamilton-Brown was dismissed.
The stylish first-drop got out after collecting a quick fire 51 off 36 balls, smashing five fours and two towering sixes.
Davies continued to hurt the bowlers and remained unbeaten until the end of the innings. He scored 99 runs from 56 deliveries, clobbering 15 fours and two thunderous sixes.
Tom Maynard also played well towards the end of the innings, scoring an unbeaten 29 off 18 balls, guiding the team’s total above 200.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Nash-c1247 did a decent job, taking one wicket for 11 runs in two overs.
