Steve Davis: Ronnie O’Sullivan is not alone in suffering from snooker burnout
The living legend of the snooker world, Steve Davis has claimed that the ‘Rocket’ Ronnie O’Sullivan is not the only player to have suffered from snooker burnout. The veteran has seen the likes of Stephen Hendry, who had breaks in their career and came back
regardless of their intended retirements. He believes that O’Sullivan is the only player who can make the decision of retirement or quitting on the spur of the moment.
He said that burnout is a problem with a lot of players and one can lose interest. O’Sullivan obviously loves the game and it’s hard to believe if one completely falls out of love with the game.
“Burnout is a problem for a lot of players. You can lose interest. It's just how you cope with that. You know full well you're not going to wake up every morning and be desperate to go to the practice table. You've just got to be understanding of how it
changes for you and perhaps cut your cloth accordingly,” he said.
The former three-time world champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan thought about retiring from the sport a couple of times before in his career but the latest hint he gave after the Bank of Beijing China Open 2011 seemed real as he phoned the world championship organisers
and tournament officials about his withdrawal from the main event of the season.
Later on he diverted his decision after he was asked to submit it in writing to make it official. After that he visited Dr Steve Peters to ask for his help in regaining his fighting spirit and rhythm of the game so that he can compete well in the championship.
The 35-year-old is playing his first match against the Welshman, Dominic Dale, on Monday, the 18th of April
“What we've got with Ronnie is another animal entirely. I'm not sure there's any plan there with Ronnie. I'm not saying that's totally the case because he may have a plan, but Ronnie is very much on his emotions and if he doesn't fancy it on the day, he
won't,” said Davis
The six-time world champion, Steve Davis is still playing even at the age of 53. He confirmed that he’ll be playing next season in a few less exhibitions and try to enjoy the tournaments. Although Davis has tumbled down at number 41, he still has interest
in playing snooker.
