Steve Davis edges Jack Lisowski in thrilling final frame: World Snooker Championship qualifiers
Veteran potter Steve Davis has beaten Jack Lisowski by a frame score of 10-9 in the third round of the World Snooker Championship at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, England.
The six-time world champion, Steve Davis, was pushed to the limits by the 19-year-old, Jack Lisowski. It was a fully stretched battle between the players with the overall score line of 18-73, 91-31, 60-50, 51-61, 46-73, 72-33, 22-71, 14-121, 56-62, 41-69,
101-21, 106-24, 34-78, 61-39, 58-49, 69-12, 40-60, 84-16, and 59-16.
It was a battle of the age versus experience. Both players presented spectacular game with some classy breaks of 91, 121, 101, 105, and 80.
The teenager, Lisowski, took the first blood with a dominant break of 41 before Davis clawed back to take two frames in a row with a magnificent break of 91 in the second. However, he lost the fourth after missing a frame winning chance and the scores were
levelled by 2-2 before the interval.
After the interval, Lisowski pocketed the first scrappy frame before Davis responded with a decisive 61 in the sixth to level the things once again by 3-3. However, everyone was left flabbergasted when the rising star, Lisowski, dominated the next three
frames in a row with a mind boggling match-highest century break of 121 in the eighth to lead Davis by 6-3.
In the evening session, the first frame was again taken by Lisowski with a dominant break of 50 before the legend bounced back to take the next two frames straight with back-to-back century breaks of 101 and 105 and reduced the deficit by 7-5.
Lisowski managed in winning the thirteenth with a couple of quick fires, 37 and 15, in the end but he again lost the next three. Davis, who is one of the best safety players ever, showed his flawless safety skills and equalled the scores by 8-8.
Both players got good chances in the seventeenth but could not avail it however Lisowski in the end was able to roll in the final 28 to leave his opponent one frame down with two to play.
But Lisowski, who was looking for one frame now, was not given much chance in the eighteenth as Davis fired up a superb break of 80 to force the decider which he also won with a couple of 38 and 15 to seal his victory by 10-9.
It was very narrow escape for the 54-year-old Davis. However, he is through to the final qualifying round where he will face Stephen Lee.
