Steve Friesen, another first timer wins at the Price Cutter Charity Championship on Nationwide Tour
Steve Friesen, the 34-year-old from Nebraska, clinched his first high profile title at the Price Cutter Charity Championship at Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield, Montana on the Nationwide Tour.
Carding a final round score of eight-under, 64, Friesen posted an aggregate of a whooping 26-under, 262 to clear the field by five shots. the nearest contender came out to be the young Gavin Coles from Australia who posted a final round of six-under, 66
but failed to come anywhere close to Friesen’s strong performance.
"It's been a magical week. I feel like I belong. There are so many great players on this Tour that I knew I had to go real low today," said Friesen, who became the fourth winner in the past five years to post a 26-under total. "When you have an opportunity
like this you want to take advantage of it."
Friesen’s last two rounds on the event spoke volumes of his good form when he did not drop a single shot in his last 36-hole stretch. He pulled in eight birdies in the last 18 holes posting one of the strongest final round performances of his career.
Friesen finished for a joint 49th at the Cox Classic last week, barely managing to get a place at the Price Cutter Charity although he remained unaware of his selection till the last moment and was only informed by the friend on telephone.
Friesen has now become the fifth consecutive first timer to have won a title in the current season and also the eight for the year. Other first-timers for the season include Ted Potter, Jr., Russell Henley, Steve Wheatcroft, Erik Compton, Russell Knox, Harris
English, and J.J. Killeen who have all won an event on the tour.
The current victory has not only helped Friesen financially but has also given him considerable boost on the tour money list. He is now 23rd on the money list and if he is able to maintain the status quo, there is a strong chance he will be able
to qualify for the PGA Tour next year.
Top 25 on the money list will proceed to play on the tour for the year 2012. Friesen collected a cheque of $112,500 as a winner’s share.
