Steve Goacher and Matt Owen retain lead at the 2012 Flying Fifteen National Championships: Day 2
After a consistent sailing show on the second day of 2012 Flying Fifteen National Championships, Steve Goacher and Matt Owen on their Freshwater 2 retained their overall lead in the Flying Fifteen fleet. The pair was impressive on Perth waters, as they clinched
one bullet to remain on the first podium place.
To everyone’s disappointment, weather conditions were not typically Perth-style. The fleet had to wait for some wind to fill in so they could start the proceedings of Day 2. Even the Race Officer, Les Swinton, had no other intention and was left lamenting
upon the conditions. He set the course a couple of times so that they could catch some winds or at least some shifts, but to no success.
After a while, a reasonably steady wind started blowing easterly which was a happy greeting for the fleet on their arrival to the racing area at River Swan. As the fleet started sailing, the breeze began to fade away rapidly which was definitely a troubling
situation for them.
The first race had to face a postponement because the breeze faded away completely. Swinton changed the course line again to the south east, then again back to the east until the south westerly sea breeze filled in at 4:30 pm and the race commenced.
Goacher and Owen had to pull up their socks and sail brilliantly if they wanted to stick to the top spot. They did some impressive tactics during the race and finished with impressive scores at the conclusion of the day. They have compiled 11 points so far
after four races, while Alan Bax and Simon Childs are on second podium position with 13 points.
