Steve Hooker on a much needed break
After a nerve testing and tiring season, Steve Hooker, the Diamond League Ambassador of Samsung has finally managed to have a break, a little bit more than in other years. The continued emergence of talented and potential young rivals has been giving him
the much needed motivation for 2011 and 2012.
While talking to the reporters Hooker expressed that development of young guys like Renaud and Malte Mohr had been notable during the year and it was going to be interesting to see how they would go through the next year since they had got European Indoors
right in the start of 2011. “They are young, talented vaulters. Having those sorts of rivals around keeps me motivated,” said the Australian pole vaulter.
Commenting upon his performance during 2010 the athlete was of the view that for him 2010 was a very different year having his major goals (world indoors and commonwealth games) at either end of the inaugural Diamond League season. He revealed that it was
a year in which he had a lower-key approach, which was also depicted from some of the results he produced. “As a whole, though, I think it will make me approach 2011 and 2012 with still more intensity and a desire to get good results,” he added further.
Talking about taking the break, the pole vaulter said that since he had got home from Delhi, he has been spending most of his time in Melbourne doing very little and even missed the Melbourne Cup horse-race. He spent most part of the first week sleeping
as he was feeling like washed out after the commonwealth games, both physically and mentally. Now, his whole attention is focused upon resting and recovering. “It’s been a season when I have looked forward to the break a little more than usual. The break has
been mentally refreshing, which is what I needed,” concluded Hooker.
