Steve Johnson dominates as Baltimore Orioles crush Seattle Mariners 9-2 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles continued to impress their critics as they hammered the Seattle Mariners 9-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, August 8 in the finale of a three match series.
With their win, the Orioles also completed a deserving series sweep. Buck Showalter and company edged Seattle 3-1 in series opener and the continued their good work in Game 2 as well with an 8-7 win.
Matt Wieters provided Baltimore with an excellent start on Wednesday with an RBI double to deep right-centre in the third innings. J.J. Hardy’s RBI single to left in the third inning stretched Orioles’ lead to 2-0. Wieters continued to put pressure on the
Mariners and Mark Reynolds added a solo home-run to right-centre in the fourth to take the score to 5-0.
Nick Markakis hit one of the two Orioles’ home-runs and Wieters doubled to deep centre in the seventh to help Baltimore secure a comfortable win. Starting pitcher Steve Johnson pitched six solid innings for his first of the season. He gave up just five hits
and two runs while striking-out nine.
"Stevie was good, huh? That was fun to watch," Showalter said. "I tried to watch it as a manager trying to win a game but also a fan of those type of situations. We really wanted Steve to have success tonight, for him and for the club."
"It's something I was thinking about for a long time -- get my first win and have him here," Johnson said. "And the way those days worked out, 23 years to the day, it's just special. It's all I can really say about it. It means a lot to me."
Having won eight of their last ten games, Baltimore has certainly raised their game-play to a higher level to narrow down the gap between themselves and New York Yankees to just four games at the top of American League East Division standings table.
The fans will be delighted with what they have seen from Orioles after the All Star Break and it will be exciting to see if Showalter and his men can finally make it to the playoffs this year.
