Steve McCann clinches top honours at Nescau MegaRamp Invitational
Australia’s professional BMX rider Steve McCann emerged triumphant at the Nescau MegaRamp Invitational that went down at Sambadrome in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday, July 2nd.
The 28-year-old was up against a line-up of talented riders from all across the globe, which included the likes of Australia’s Vince Byron, America’s James Foster, Anthony Napolitan and Colton Satterfield.
America’s Morgan Wade, winner of the MegaRamp Open at Woodward West in Tehachapi, California, was missing from the line-up on Saturday after sustaining a serious injury during the practice session on Friday. He suffered a ruptured spleen and broken wrist and is out of action for now.
Not as widely known for his skills as some of his competitors, McCann was hardly on anyone’s list as a favourite for the event. Even with the odds against him, the Australian managed to overcome his competition and walk away with the win.
The two-time X Games medalist, Napolitan was unable to deprive McCann from clinching the top honours. However, a no-handed double front-flip allowed him to take home the silver medal.
Byron, who had collected a silver medal at MegaRamp Open and gold on mini-MegaRamp at X Games China 2011, was unable to come up with his best during the contest, but still impressed the judges enough to earn the bronze medal.
Saturday also featured the exciting BMX athletes take each other on in the high air and the Best Trick competition.
Brazil’s Doug Leichi, who had the majority of the crowd cheering for him, prevailed in the high air competition after airing 20.5 feet on the MegaRamp quarter-pipe. McCann once again found himself in the Top 3 after airing 19.5 feet to clinch second place. Byron settled for third place after soaring 19 feet in the air.
America’s Satterfield pulled off a no-handed cork 720 over the 60-foot gap of the MegaRamp during the Best Trick contest. The trick remained the most impressive of the day and eventually carried him off to victory.
Byron made it into the top-three once again, this time securing runner-up place, by throwing a 3-whip over the gap. America’s Foster rounded out the top-three with a double back-flip.
After getting done with the Nescau MegaRamp Invitational, the four-stop MegaRamp Championship Series will head off to Los Angeles for X Games 17 and then make a final stop at Bob Burnquist’s residence in Vista, California.
