Steve McClaren may return to England role
Former England national team coach Steve McClaren may be in line for a shock return to the role, it was revealed on Wednesday.
Since being sacked from the role after 17 months when he failed to qualify for the UEFA 2008 European Football Championship, McClaren has gone on to defy his critics by winning the Dutch Eredivisie title
with FC Twente, thir first league championship. He is now manager of German side Wolfsburg, with whom he has won three and drawn one of his side’s matches so far this season.
As a result of his impressive showing with Twente, Trevor Brooking, the English Football Association's director of football development, has revealed that the former Middlesbrough boss could have a chance
to take over the England job when current incumbent Fabio Capello leaves the role.
'Wouldn't rule out anyone'
He told reporters that: "Could Steve do the England job again? I am sure if he continues to be a success his name will be in the frame again. If you think he will be a lot more experienced this time around
and he has learnt his lesson, then why not? I wouldn't rule out anyone. I think it would be very unfair to do that. Steve has done fantastic to get a title [with FC Twente]. PSV and Ajax are usually the sides in Holland who do that and now Wolfsburg are picking
up.
“It is a big challenge and it is great for an English coach. Terry Venables went abroad and did well, but Sir Bobby Robson was the one manager who went to three countries and was a massive success. We
have to encourage our coaches to do that so that they go abroad and get that experience if they can. They have to do it on merit and Steve has done well."
Capello is set to stand down within two years, having confirmed that he will resign after the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine if England manage to qualify.
