Steve Mullings and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce observe meet records at the Sport e Solidarieta
Lignano Sabbiadoro, the Italian city which is known for its athletics friendly environment, while hosting the 22nd edition of the Sport e Solidarieta observed some fascinating results. Spectators of the event were stunned by the fast finishes
of Jamaican sprinters, Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, who crossed the finishing line for a new meet record of 11.11 seconds and Steve Mullings, who observed a new track record of 9.98 seconds.
Fraser-Pryce, a 100m sprint specialist, is the reigning world and Olympic champion for the distance. For having the honour, she is only the second female runner who boasts of such splendid achievements.
Mullings, on the other hand, specialises in both 100m and 200m runs. The 28-year-old Jamaican, who right after entering senior athletics competitions bagged the National Championships in 2004, is among the favourite runners to compete for Jamaica at the
upcoming World Athletics Championships in Daegu.
Running at Lignano Sabbiadoro, the strenuous strides of Mullings produced the fastest finish ever on the track. Before him, the title was held by his countryman, Nest Carter, who had clocked 10.10 seconds, last season. It was indeed a stellar performance
by the Saint Elizabeth Parish-born runner, who not only decreased the finishing time by over 0.12 seconds, but also defeated a formidable field comprised of runners like Darvis Patton, Mike Rodger, Richard Thompson, Jeffrey Demps and Trell Kimmons.
In the women’s corner, Fraser Pryce marked her dominance on the track which she uses to train herself during the summer season. Just like Mullings, Fraser-Pryce also broke the track record of her countrywoman, Carrie Russel, who marked 11.22 seconds for
bagging the title last year. Russel, the track record defender did compete this year also, but she could only finish her race just behind the title holder for clocking an improved time of 11.20 seconds.
The spectators of the event, who had already been enthralled by the electrifying performance of American relay runners, who produced the season’s best results, were elated to see other athletes also put up a wonderful show in the meet.
