Steve Mullings dominates track at the Terra Sarda International meeting in Arzana – Athletics news
Steve Mullings, the 28-year-old sprinter from Jamaica, who specialises in 100m and 200m sprints, prevailed in the double contest at the Terra Sarda International meeting held in Arzana, on Saturday, July 30.
Mullings, who had kicked-off his career for claiming a 100m bronze medal at the Pan American Junior Championships, propelled into the 100m contest only for marking an impressive sub-ten (9.93 seconds). The shorter distance sprint observed a battle between
the heat runner of 2007 and his countryman, Lerone Clarke, who finished-off his race in 10.13 seconds. For adding another victory in the 200m showdown, he breasted the tape in 20.22 seconds.
The Jamaican, who is the reigning 4x100m Relay world champion, is being regarded among the strongest contenders for this month’s IAAF World Athletics Championships to commence in Daegu. In the global athletics event, he will battle in the both distances.
The reason for him prevailing as the pre-favourite for the Daegu event are not baseless as recently, he has been displaying some of the most impeccable performances at standard platforms like Samsung Diamond League series and the 200m Jamaican trials. Moreover,
for the 100m meets, he has been a habitual sub-ten finisher.
Appearing at Terra Sarda, the Jamaican was expected to compete against Andrew Howe, the formidable runner, who eventually developed an injury and had to go through a major surgery. The 26-year-old Italian will now have to wait for another six meetings before
he will be capable of resuming with his running discipline.
On the women’s side of the competition, it was Marzia Caravelli, who for clocking a new personal best finish of 13.01 seconds, emerged at the 100m Hurdles event. This was an impressive performance as she touched her PB twice in a week – first in Pergine
Valsugana and later in the Sardinian meet.
Caravelli, the 29-year-old girl who represents Italy in both 100m and 200m hurdle sprints has observed an unprecedented form and fitness this year, as she has been hitting on her PB and taking it to a new level. Her recent personal best of 13.01 stands as
the third fastest finish in Italy’s hurdling history, as it is just 0.04 seconds behind Carla Tuzzi, the national record holder.
As an athlete, Caravelli’s story or biography is interesting than any other competitor. The young girl, who is a part-time athlete, teaches deaf children and trains them to lead dependent lives. However, such is her passion for the sport that she is never
short of form and stamina that may lead her to a top position in the world of athletics. The second position in the Sardinian meet was claimed by Rio de Janeiro, who clocked her PB for marking an impressive finish of 13.08 seconds.
