Steve Nash: Phoenix Suns did me a favour with a trade to Los Angeles Lakers – NBA Update
Legendary point guard Steve Nash is set to play for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2012-2013 NBA season after a sign and trade deal between the Lakers and the Phoenix Suns was agreed.
The mouth-watering back court pairing of Nash and Lakers super star Kobe Bryant already has Lakers fans excited, and Nash has now revealed how that pairing could have just remained a dream, had there not been a good bond between him and the Phoenix Suns front office.
After the trade was agreed, Nash released an emotional statement marking his departure from the Phoenix Suns, where he is almost revered. The star thanked the Suns for 8 wonderful years with the franchise and praised them especially for making the trade that will mean he can play in a great team and stay close to his family.
Nash explained in his statement, that he approached the Suns owner Robert Sarver and President Lon Babby to make a trade. The Suns high ups were not very keen about that at first as they thought it wouldn't serve their best interests.
Luckily for Steve though, they found a will and a way.
“They were very apprehensive and didn’t want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.”
Steve was almost abandoned by the Dallas Mavericks when the Suns came from him and have since been great to the player who has won two NBA MVP awards at the franchise. With their latest favour to him, Nash was left humbled and grateful and let that be known to the team.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to the organization and Robert in particular. I know how hard this was for him and that fact that he was able to help me and my family in this way … it means a lot and says a lot about his character. I will never forget this gesture. Above and beyond.”
With Nash’s departure from the Suns, one of the most romantic relationships in NBA history has now come to an end. The veteran though did end it in a classy way.
