Phoenix Suns superstar Steve Nash issues an emotional statement as he departs for the Los Angeles Lakers in a hope to win the all elusive NBA Championship
The Phoenix Suns will no longer be led by Steve Nash. The legendary point guard and team talisman is set to leave for the Los Angeles Lakers after 8 great years with the Suns and his departure will no doubt leave a big gap on the court, and cause heartache for fans off it.
Nash too was emotionally invested in the Phoenix Suns so much so that with the trade being agreed between Los Angles and Phoenix, he immediately issued a statement to address the fans and the franchise.
Nash remarked how it was a great experience playing for the Suns for the past many years and wanted to thank the city and the team. He also said that it was a very difficult decision for him to leave Phoenix but one that he had to make.
“For the last 8 seasons I’ve been blessed to play for a team and a city that has embraced me and that I have come to call home.”
Nash then explained the machinations of his deal. He admitted that he was the one who approached the owner Robert Sarver and President Lon Babby with a request to get the trade done, and not the other way round. The fact that a move to Los Angeles would allow him to stay close to his family and children was the most important motive behind Nash’s demand.
“After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we’ve agreed that it’s time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with L.A. because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family.”
The Suns had originally offered Nash a two year deal worth around $6 million a year, but it was clear the player was not going to stay in Phoenix. He also had a lucrative offer from the Toronto Raptors, but chose not to accept it.
Instead, the Phoenix Suns made a sign and trade deal with Los Angeles upon Steve’s request. In the end, Steve said he was very thankful to the Suns and wished them every success in the future.
