Somerset announced its 15-man squad for the esteemed tournament on Tuesday and the team would leave for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 on Sunday, September 18.
The county has been sweating over wicket-keeping in the absence of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760. Both the T20 games between England and West Indies clash with the CLT20 qualifiers scheduled to be played in Hyderabad between September 19 to 21.
It was being anticipated that the County might gamble on using the teenage wicketkeeper Alex Barrow behind the stumps but Snell’s performance in a CB40 game and a Championship match earned him selector’s nod.
He kept wickets for Somerset in their final group match of Clydesdale Bank 40 tournament against Essex, before playing a County Championship match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 as Kieswetter and Buttler were both called up by the selectors for the only T20 International against on-tour India.
Somerset's director of cricket, Brian Rose told the club website about their decision of including Snell in Somerset’s squad for CLT20 qualifier.
"I think we might have been made to look ridiculous had we not taken a specialist keeper," Rose was quoted as saying by the official website of Somerset.
"Alex Barrow could have done it at a pinch, but it wouldn't have been fair on him. Steve Snell did a good job for us in the CB40 game with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 and on the opening day of the Championship game with Hampshire so he was the obvious choice," he added further.
Alfonso Thomas will be leading the squad in the tournament. Somerset has been placed in Pool A with Kolkata Knight Riders and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Auckland-c766 Aces. The side will play its first game of qualifier on September 20 against Auckland.
