Steve Spagnuolo could return to Philadelphia Eagles, says Rams’ safety Quintin Mikell – NFL News
Steve Spagnuolo, who was recently fired after serving three years as St. Louis Rams’ Head Coach, could return to his former team, Philadelphia Eagles, in a slightly different capacity, Rams’ safety Quintin Mikell said on Wednesday.
Mikell, who has played under Spag when both were at Philadelphia, said that he had a conversation with the head coach after he was fired.
According to Mikell, the coach was still contemplating his options and had not decided where he would end up. However, the safety said, there were strong chances that Spag might return to the Eagles, but to serve in a different capacity.
Under Eagles’ Head Coach, Andy Reid, Spag served as linebacker and defensive backs coach for eight years after joining the franchise in 1999.
In 2007, he moved to New York to coach the Giants and after spending two years there, he took up the job as Rams’ head coach.
In his three-year career at St. Louis, the Rams played 48 games and won only 10. The most number of victories under his tenure came in 2010 when the franchise won seven games. However, Spag, could not led the Rams to any postseason appearance.
If Spag opts to join the Eagles again, he is going to replace the franchise’s defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, who is speculated to be dismissed in the days to come.
Spag’s reunion with the Eagles is subjected to his decision to take a step back and once again start working as a subordinate.
"I would say he wouldn't be against returning to the Eagles," Mikell said. "You got to remember he was a head coach, and it's not easy to go from being a head coach to taking a step down. But I would also say that if he did something like this, he would
have to be somewhere he was comfortable with the situation and the people."
The Eagles have not given any official word regarding appointing Spag, but it is widely rumoured that the franchise has contacted Spag.
Now that the Eagles Owner, Jeffrey Lurie, has also decided to continue with Andy Reid for 14th straight year, chances of Spag’s return are brighter.
In terms of making decisions regarding selection of coaching staff, Lurie has completely authorised Reid to pick the team he wants.
The Eagles, too, are trying to instil new energy into the team that had an awful season. Although the team displayed a marvellous performance towards the end of the just-concluded regular season, the early slump forced them out of the playoffs.
Reid is yet to address media regarding his next year’s coaching staff.
