Steve Stricker falls from the top at the PGA Championship at Atlanta
The top ranking American golfer, Steve Stricker who pulled in a record round on the opening day of the PGA Championship here at Atlanta Athletic Club on Thursday, August 11, took a dreadful plunge on the second day carding a lopsided round of four-over,
74.
Overnight leader on the start of the second day, Stricker has now fallen from the top to settle for a joint seventh with an aggregate score of three-under, 137.
"I was on the other end of the spectrum today where it was tough going all the way around," he said. "But if we would have shot 2 under yesterday and 1 under today, we'd be feeling pretty good. The way we got there wasn't ideal, but we're still in there,
only a couple back, and anything could happen on the weekend."
Ranked number five on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Stricker is the highest ranking American player and is still in search of his first major title despite having won twice on the tour this year. He leveled the record for the lowest score ever
carded in a major event on the first day when he pulled in an eye-popping 63, without dropping a single shot in his 18-hole stretch.
Stricker remained bogey-free for the two opening holes on the second day, but stumbled on the first bogey of the day at par-four, 3rd. He dropped five more shots all the way till the final hole and carded just two birdies to fall for a disappointing
four-over, 74.
Winner of the Memorial Tournament in June this year and after successfully defending his title at the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run for the third consecutive time, Stricker is currently in top form and is eager to break the major taboo here at
the Atlanta Athletic Club.
The 44-year-old Wisconsin resident has won 19 professional titles in his stellar career after he turned professional in 1990 but has failed in his major bids so far. His highest major finish came in the year 1998 where he finished runners up. He has posted
brilliant results so far in all the three majors of the season, with a joint 11th at Masters, a joint 19th at the US open and a joint 12th at the Open Championship held last month.
