Steve Stricker honoured by Golf Writers
The American golfer Steve Stricker was given the ASAP Sports/ Jim Murray Award by the Golf Writers Association of America. This accolade is meant for the player who has exhibited the most cooperation with the media during his season that year. The nine-time
winner of the PGA Tour, Stricker, has had a decent year in golf in 2010.
Steve appreciates and likes all the attention and admiration he receives from the media and his fan. His openness to the media has hence made him beat Stewart Cink and Tom Lehman for this award. This Wisconsin born player started professional golfing from
the Canadian professional golf tour where he won two tournaments. 2009 was a superb year for the player when he won three tournaments and finished second on the money list. Stricker has also attained a career high rank of second place in the world.
Stricker’s best major result was the PGA Championship of 1998 when he finished runner up to PGA player Vijay Singh. Loosing the major by only two strokes, this was the best he ever played in a major.
In 2004, Stricker somehow lost his touch for golf and wasn’t able to maintain his playing rights. In 2006, achieving seven top ten finishes, he won PGA Tour Comeback player of the year award. Stricker received the same honour in 2007 as well. As mentioned
earlier, in 2009, Stricker claimed three wins. Being victorious t the Crone Plaza Invitational at Colonial, John Deere Classic and Deutsche Bank Championship, Stricker made his mark in the golfing world again.
Winning two events in 2010, Stricker has had a decent year. Stricker defended his title at the John Deere Classic against Paul Goydos and defeated Luke Donald to win the Northern Trust Open.
Along with Steve, Jack Burke Jr. and Barbara Douglass will also be awarded by the GWAA. Burke was given the William D. Richardson Award. This award honours the individual who has made notable contributions to the sport of golf. Turning 88 this month, Burke
is very thankful for this honour. As for Douglas, she was given the Ben Hogan Award. Chairwoman of the United States Golf Association’s Women’s Committee, she is presented with the award due to her active participation in golf despite being diagnosed with
ovarian cancer in 2009.
The media friendly player Stricker will be honoured along with other winners of the further GWAA awards at the organization’s yearly awards dinner on April 6h in Augusta, Georgia.
