Steve Stricker rises to world number 4 spot on Official World Golf Rankings
Steve Stricker is the new world number four on the Official World Golf Rankings according to the press releases. The 44-year-old American is currently the highest ranked golfer in United States, as he is the only American in the
top four.
Stricker rose to new career heights on Monday after he lifted the Memorial Tournament trophy with the help of a glorious 68 on Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio. He banked on $1,116,000 and 500 FedEx points that helped him attain
an average of 6.55.
Currently, Stricker sits on a spot that makes him the most successful golfer in United States. He is the one of the three Americans residing in the top ten. The golfer is 0.49 points ahead of Phil Mickelson who won the Shell Houston
Open in April and 0.97 points ahead of Matt Kuchar, who finished as a runner-up in Accenture Match Play Championship.
Commenting on the honours he earned with this victory, Stricker said, "It's always been a big goal, probably more so now than a few years ago. I feel like I have done a lot of nice things in my career, especially the last five
or six years, and that would really top off my career. And the window of opportunity is probably getting smaller and smaller."
The veteran became teary, when Jack Nicklaus handed over the trophy to him. The tears demonstrated the sheer amount of happiness he experienced, while receiving the accolade from the legend, whose record of 18 majors is still unbeatable.
He held the trophy in his hands and said that all his hard work had paid off.
Even though Stricker's presence in the Top 10 is a big achievement, he is a long way from the top spot on the leader board, which is occupied by a European. Luke Donald is the reigning number one with 9.21 points and he leads the
European and the PGA circuit with two professional wins on each circuit. He is followed by Lee Westwood, who snatched the number one spot from Tiger Woods in October 2010.
