Steve Stricker takes advice from Tiger Woods on how to complete a PGA Tour slam
All eyes are currently set on Steve Stricker because of his chances of completing a PGA Tour slam by winning this week’s John Deere Classic, at TPC Deere Run, for the fourth time in a row.
Meanwhile, Stricker is worried about how he will get to the mark. The pressure is becoming intense. He does not want to let it overcome his confidence and one of the biggest goals of his career.
In order to tackle the current challenge, he decided to seek advice from the 14-time major winner, Tiger Woods — the only player in the history of the sport to record four consecutive victories in a single tournament twice. According to him, it was more
of an order than just an advice.
"He told me to get it done," Stricker said. "And he also threw me a jab, saying 'Only one of us has won four in a row'".
Last year, Stricker recorded the third consecutive victory with an amazing 25-foot birdie putt to outshine Troy Kelly with a one-stroke margin.
At that time, he was a bit lucky for not missing the putts on the final two holes. This time, he will have to keep things under control right from the start of the tournament.
Woods was the last player to complete a slam on the PGA Tour when he won the Buick Invitational in 2008, four times straight.
This was not it, in fact, he did in style. He took an eight-stroke margin over Japan’s Ryuji Imada to prove that he was the best in the field and no one could have matched him in any case.
Stricker now hopes to match him with a similar display of the game in Illinois.
"I know it's going to be hard, a big challenge, but I've got a lot of good vibes coming here," Stricker said. "This has been a great ride. I like to deer hunt, and I see that deer (statue) every morning coming in here. If there's any tournament I've been
meant to win, I guess it's this one".
The tournament will officially start on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
