Steve Waugh frustrated over Michael Hussey’s omission from the World Cup
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s triumphant skipper of the ICC World Cup 1999, Steve Waugh has expressed his regret and frustration over Australian middle-order batsmen Michael Hussey’s omission from the World Cup squad.
Waugh believed that the selectors had been unfair in not giving Hussey a chance to regain his fitness and prove that he would be able to play for the national team in the ongoing mega event which is being hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
Waugh said, “If Mike Hussey could have been fit, he should have gone away, I am sure Ricky (Ponting) would have wanted to go away with them. His experience is invaluable, particularly on the subcontinent wickets, and he plays spin well, I was staggered he
wasn’t picked.”
The former captain further said, “If he was going to play in any game of cricket, it should be in the World Cup.”
Initially, Hussey was selected for Australia’s 15-member World Cup squad despite suffering from a hamstring injury he picked while playing against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in the first One Day International of the seven-match series in January 2011. Hussey was sure that
he would be fit in time to play for Australia in the later stages of the mega event and wanted to be given a chance to fly with the team to the Subcontinent. However, Cricket Australia decided otherwise and replaced him by Callum Ferguson.
Hussey who had been recovering from the hamstring surgery was devastated by his omission. Reports at that time revealed that Hussey even refused to use crutches to walk, putting full pressure on the leg which had been operated on so that the recovery process
could be sped-up.
Hussey wanted CA to give him the same opportunity which they gave to the former all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611 in the last World Cup in 2007 where he had a broken arm and did not play for his team in the initial stages of the tournament. However, he came back
in the later stages of the mega event and played magnificently, helping his team retain their title.
Hussey who has scored 4,469 runs in 151 ODIs stated that it was difficult for him to come to terms with the fact that he would not be representing Australia in what would have been his last World Cup. He described the CA decision as a ‘hard pill’ to swallow.
The 35-year-old Hussey played a vital role during the recent 2010-11 Ashes series where he helped his side win the only match of the series by playing a vital part. Hussey also pulverised http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in the semi-final of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2010. His
display with the bat clearly showed that he would have been a key player in Australia’s plan for this year’s World Cup.
However, recent reports suggested that Hussey may make a comeback in the World Cup if CA decides to send him as a replacement for Australia’s latest injury struck player Doug Bollinger.
