Steve Waugh immortalised at Sydney
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s former Captain Steve Waugh was honoured with a sculpture at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
The sculpture was unveiled on the third day of the fifth Ashes Test match at Sydney.
Australia’s most successful captain was commemorated in bronze in a series of sporting icons. The 10th and final statue of the series showed Waugh raising his bat and his baggy cap in celebration of his 29th Test century.
Waugh completed the century in 2003 at Sydney off the final ball of a day’s play against England and scored perhaps the most famous Test century.
“That was probably the most pleasing moment of my career,” the legendary batsman admitted.
Waugh recalled that there were probably 30,000 people at the ground yet around 100,000 people have told him that they witnessed his historic moment.
The statue also shows the right-handed batsman’s famous red rag with which he used to wipe his perspiration during the matches. The rag inspired thousands of his supporters and fans. They used to wave replicas of the red rag especially during times when
the cricket’s man of steel was struggling.
He credited the illustrious century to his fans saying that the “red hankies” assured him with their support and got inspired to smash the last ball.
He also signified the positioning of the statue that was placed between the changing rooms and the practice nets.
“It’s on the path to where all the hard work is done,” he remarked.
He jokingly added that it was surreal to see his statue as normally a person is no longer on earth at the time of being immortalised.
Waugh was admired for his calm and composed approach during high pressure situation in games and earned the name “Iceman.”
He made his Test debut in 1985 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754. Waugh played 168 Tests for Australia in which he scored 10,927 runs. He was also a successful right-arm medium bowler. He took 92 Test wickets
and 195 wickets in ODIs.
Waugh was also inducted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame in January 2010 at SCG.
