Steve Waugh reveals 56 Cricketers were contacted by Bookies in 2010 – Cricket News Update
The former Australian captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Rodger-Waugh-c91216 has revealed that 56 cricketers reported to have been illegally contacted by bookmakers in 2010 as compared to only five players who deemed it appropriate to report to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in
2009.
Waugh, who is a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), is a strong supporter of introducing the use of lie-detectors in order to curb the growing corruption in the game of cricket.
Speaking to the media, while encouraging the upward trend in cricketers to come forward by reporting contacts by bookmaker, he said, “I don't know if the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 is doing enough. I'd like to have some conversations with them. They are doing some good work because
last year 56 players reported an approach by a bookmaker and the year before it was only five, so that suggests the players have confidence in the system and confidence that it will work."
The 46-year-old Waugh, who recently took a polygraph test insisted that it was time to root out corruption from the sport with an iron fist and for that the International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to take serious steps which includes the use of lie-detectors
to give a message to players that there is a system in place to catch them if they are suspected of any corruption.
“By taking the lie detector test I wanted to get the message out there that I was prepared to do this and I saw that [http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964 said he was prepared to do one if required too. It's totally voluntary and it's not about going over the
past, it's about moving forward,” said the former Aussie skipper.
In 2010, the cricket world was rocked by the revelation of a new type of corruption called “spot-fixing” when three http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Asif-c1993 were exposed by a British Tabloid “New of the World” to have
deliberately bowled no-balls after taking bribes from a bookie named http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mazhar-c75448 Majeed.
The three are now facing a minimum ban of five years from international cricket. However, Waugh believes that a skipper of any team found involved in such practices should be banned from the game for life.
