Steve Waugh urges selectors to back youngsters
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has urged the selectors to have faith in the youngsters because Australian cricket’s prospects depend on how much backing the younger players will get.
Waugh, who led the team to its second World Cup victory in 1999, identified http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729, Peter Siddle and Steve Smith as the younger lot to carry the Australian side for times to come.
Waugh suggested that these players would take the Australian side back to the top spot in the world of cricket in future. He said, “Khawaja made a fantastic debut, Phil Hughes is going to be a player of the future, (so too) Steve Smith, (and) Peter Siddle
- I like the way he charges in. That's the way Australia plays cricket, I am confident that we can get back to where we were, it is going to take a little bit of time but we have the players."
While speaking on the unveiling of a bronze statue in his honour at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Waugh urged Cricket Australia bosses to be patient with the younger players in the team and give them enough time to settle in. He spoke highly of the current
players in the national squad and said that even though it was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/A-Young-c41367, inexperienced outfit, it had full potential to perform at the highest level.
He rated the current situation of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 far better than 1985. He said, “My first Test match Allan Border had played more Test matches than the rest of the team combined, so that was really a new beginning in Australian cricket. This is not the same,
there's still a lot of experienced players and a lot of good young players. We're certainly not back to where we were in '85.”
Waugh advised the current Australian outfit to play as a team because it is much easier for teams to win games when the players leave their personal ambitions behind. He expressed confidence that with time, these younger players would learn to play like
a unit as they get to know each other better.
