Steve Waugh willing to help rebuild Australian cricket but rejects coaching role
Australia’s former Captain Steve Waugh rejected the idea to coach Australia but offered his help to rebuild Australian cricket following their humiliating performance in the Ashes series.
Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 announced on Friday that they will be undertaking a review of all the facets of Australia’s dismal performance in the Ashes.
Australia suffered probably their worst Ashes loss in years when they slumped to a total of three innings defeats in the series. Australia went one game down in the five match series but gained momentum when they levelled the series at 1-1 by winning the
Perth test. However, Australia went down as they lost the last two Ashes games by a formidable innings margin. As a result, England retained the urn and the Ashes title for the first time in the last twenty four years on Australian soil, and they couldn't
have done it in a more convincing manner.
James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive hinted that the board is considering some changes in the top management as well. There have been calls to dismiss Australia’s head coach Tim Nielsen, however, he seems all set to take over the role from
the chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch, if the board decides to relieve him of his duties.
However, Waugh made it clear that he does not wish to take up the role from Nielsen but will be happy to extend his expertise to the Aussies’ cricket rebuilding programme.
“I love Australian cricket, I want to see it be successful but value is more of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/A-Mentor-c41238,” the former Test skipper conceded saying that he simply does not have the time to devote fully to the coaching job.
Waugh has been involved with a lot of philanthropic work especially raising funds for a leper children’s colony in Kolkota, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750.
“I’m very busy with my philanthropic work and business and family and you can’t do everything. But I certainly would like to help on the sidelines,” Waugh admitted.
Former Australian cricketer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-c53369 Jones also urged Waugh to save the cricket from their plunging form. He criticized Nielsen’s credentials and immediately asked for the services of the greatest Australian captain.
“My name generally comes up when there’s a coaching role, I think I must be on a list that they go to,” Waugh stated on Saturday.
However, Waugh admitted that this is not the first time that Australia is going through a tough time, saying he has seen all the ups and downs of the Australian team.
“I do keep in contact with quite a few Australian players behind the scenes but I’d listen to whatever role came up,” Waugh told the reporters.
