Steve Webster’s performance at the Volvo China Open
Steve Webster, a 37-year-old English professional golf player, faced plenty of challenges at the Volvo China Open, played at Binhai Lake Golf Club in Tianjin, China.
The Volvo China Open has concluded, with several players improving their rankings. However, there were many players who could not prove their mettle at the event, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and OneAsia Tour.
Since January, he has played six tournaments in total. He missed the cut in three events, and Volvo China Open is one of them.
He finished below the top-30 leaderboard positions in three other events as well, which took a toll on his performance.
He was unable to score well throughout the four-day event in the Asian region. He opened the tournament on Thursday by scoring a birdie. Then he shot one par and carded his first bogey of the tournament on the third hole.
After making three consecutive pars, he shot one more birdie on the 7th hole and ended the front nine holes of the course.
He was playing well till the front nine. However, he lost all his hopes on the back nine holes. From the 10th to 13th hole he shot at par. Then, he made three unimpressive bogeys and recorded 2-over 74 in the first round.
Moving on, in the second round, he made one par and shot a double-bogey on the third hole.
This was his turning point. Later on, he shot two more bogeys until the 10th hole. After such a mediocre performance, he improved his strokes and shot four birdies till the end of the day.
His bogeys in the end had an impact on his overall standing, as he was in the danger zone after the first round. His final score was 1-over 145, and the minimum criterion to move ahead was 142 strokes.
His inconsistent score was the reason behind him missing the cut in China. Webster's second-round score was fine, but the main problem was his first round, in which he shot a 74 in a very unimpressive style.
He turned professional in 1995, and since then, he has won only two professional events and on the European Tour. He recorded his first win at the Telecom Italia Open in 2005, and Portugal Masters in 2007.
In the current year, he is not playing well. He has been unable to finish on the top or among the top-25 leaderboard positions.
He started the 2012 season at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and missed the cut there. One week later, he played the Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol, and failed again.
Webster achieved his first cut at the Trophée Hassan II and finished tied for the 58th position. Soon after this event, he played the Sicilian Open and the Maybank Malaysian Open, where he finished for the 31st and 33rd positions
respectively.
He somehow managed to make the cut in the three tournaments and played the Volvo China Open, but missed the cut again.
Since 1995, he has not been eligible for most of the major events. He only played seven major tournaments in total and has not been able make the cut.
It may be right to say that he is not in form since day one. Analysts said that he should improve his game on the practice range and hire a new caddie. Learning from the other professional players will be helpful as well.
If Webster can improve his game in the near future, then he is likely to get on the victory track. On the other hand, there are many leaders, whom he can follow in order to bring the much-needed changes to his game.
