Steve Williams regrets his emotional outburst over Tiger Woods
The caddie who shot to fame at last week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational has finally decided to mend fences with Tiger Woods over his reckless remarks. Steve Williams, who has been with Adam Scott for the last three months and was only recently confirmed as his permanent caddie, went overboard to state Scott’s victory as “the greatest victory of my life”. Williams now regrets that he ever said those things and blames much part of it to the anger over his termination by his previous boss Tiger Woods.
“Looking back on it, I was a bit over the top,” Williams told FOXSports.com. “I had a lot of anger in me about what happened and it all came out. I said what I said, but I'm not going to say any more about Tiger.”
Williams’s decision would have come after consultations with many of his friends and associates who might have asked him to make up with the Woods camp, which is seriously perturbed about Williams’ recent outburst. Woods’ private life has been one of the most heavily guarded one and the former world number one has rarely allowed any insights into his private affairs.
Williams remains privy to many secret matters of Woods’ personal life which have still not made it to the headlines and the former caddie has the capability to deliver serious damage in the advent of their deteriorated relations.
But for the moment now, it seems Williams will not be doing any such thing which might cause harm to his former boss’ already worsening conditions. There were also rumours doing rounds that Williams will perhaps venture into writing a book, giving a rare insight into Woods’ elusive private life but it now appears to be a distant possibility.
“When we were coming down the stretch and all those people were calling out my name, I mean I've never experienced anything like that and when Adam won, all of a sudden, all that emotion poured out,” Williams added, “But, look, it's time to move on. The Tiger thing is over.”
Scott’s final putt on the 18th appeared rather a victory for the old caddy as he raised his arms in ecstasy and hugged Scott as if he had won himself. Williams caddied for Woods for a whooping 11 times at Firestone Country Club, helping him win seven of those starts. He also saw Woods win 13 out of his 14 major events in the course of his career while he carried his luggage for him.
The duo were often regarded as the best team around on the course and shared many emotional moments during their tenure together until Woods decided to part ways with his trusted caddie after their estranged relations.
