Steve Williams takes a shot at his former boss Tiger Woods
Steve Williams, Tiger Woods’ former trusted caddie, is making the most out of Adam Scott’s recent victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last week and has decided to dig deeper into his murky confrontation with Woods.
Williams came out on the weekend with his unusual comments when he termed his weekend with Scott as the “the greatest week of my life”, and many of the former big guns of the game have rendered the statements as reckless, than anything else.
Williams further deteriorated the situation when he shot back at Woods’ remarks on last Tuesday that he actually fired Williams “face to face”. Williams denied that nothing of that sort ever happened.
“That is incorrect,” said Williams, “I was told on the phone we needed to take a break. And in caddie lingo, that means you're fired. Simple as that.”
Williams also claims that the mere reason of his dismissal from a 12-year-old trusted caddying was his temporary alliance with Scott alone, and there was no other reason behind the decision.
The accusation that Woods has been lying again to the press has not gone down well with the Tiger camp and Williams’ former boss is apparently infuriated by the comments. Mark Steinberg issued a press statement against Williams’ remarks, further trying to
elaborate the misadventure which took place last month.
“Tiger flew from Florida to Philly to visit AT&T National and also for the express purpose of personally and officially telling Steve that they would no longer be working together,” he said. “Tiger felt strongly about meeting face to face. Any assertions
to the contrary are simply false.”
Williams guided Scott to a glorious wire-to-wire victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday and his contribution has overwhelmed the young Aussie beyond any doubt. Scott has however, decided to stay away from the centre of the controversy and
have given the former duo a chance to sort things out between themselves.
Several former stars of the sport including Paul Azinger have criticized Williams’ decision to speak to the press which is considered something off limits for caddies. The controversy is certain to do rounds until the PGA Championship scheduled next week
in Atlanta.
